READ SOUTHALL BAND
With an undeniable Okie twang in his voice, Read Southall is about as country as you can get. Hailing from Altus and raised on a steady diet of 70s rock and 80s country, he made a name for himself strumming his six-string to whoever would hear it down there, going as far as someone can in southwest Oklahoma.
It wasn’t until he moved to Stillwater, however, where he met the boys who’d make up the rest of the dutifully eclectic outfit known as the Read Southall Band, crafting a sound that draws on everything from blues and metal but with a supremely steadfast and highly excitable punk ethic that, as success starts to happen for the band—and boy, is it—still holds a big belief structure in their professional lives.
“We’re just punks, man,” Southall said. “That’s who we are. We’re young kids who don’t know what the hell we’re doing. I think that’s something that we did right from the jump—we never really had a plan, it was just a grassroots start. It allowed us, and still allows us, to play freely without judgment and without trying to fit into one mold and, man, that’s rock and roll. It don’t matter, we’re making music and we’re having a great time.”
Formed In Stillwater Oklahoma, The Read Southall Band is comprised of 4 native Oklahoman’s. Read Southall (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) Reid Barber (drums) Jeremee Knipp (Bass) JT Perry (Lead Guitar and harmonies). With all members having different influences in music, they have come together to create a unique red dirt/southern rock sound. With overdriven guitars and heavy drums the Read Southall Band aims to deliver a rock and roll experience at every show.
